2019 Training Week & Symposium

The Wales Acute Medicine registrars spent last week in the beautiful Gower at the annual Wales AIM training week, jointly provided by WAPS and HEIW. This year’s busy schedule included:

  • Acute hepatology from Drs Andrew Yeoman and Dai Samuel (consultant hepatologists at the Royal Gwent)
  • Advance and end of life care planning, talkCPR, and escalation of care from Dr Rob Martin (consultant geriatrician at Royal Glamorgan), Dr Mark Taubert (consultant in palliative care at Velindre), and our very own Caz Burford (consultant in intensive care medicine at UHW)
  • Leadership and management training
  • QI speed dating (!)
  • The WAPS AGM
  • Acute Neurology with Dr Owain Crimmins (consultant in acute medicine at Princess of Wales)
  • The annual WAPS Symposium
  • Trainee presentation competition (congratulations to Alice who won the prize of £100!)

In the evenings we enjoyed some meals out and even a trip to the beach!

The symposium on Thursday 20th June attracted approximately 100 delegates and if you were one of them we hope you had a great time and learnt a lot!

All the money raised from the symposium will go toward funding acute medicine training and promoting careers in acute medicine in Wales. If you haven’t yet completed your feedback form there is still time and we will take all suggestions into consideration for next year’s symposium which will be in North Wales – keep an eye out here (or on our social media) for further details!

Specialist Skill Bursary

As in previous years, the Wales acute medicine STC would like to offer a bursary of £400 to a Welsh Acute Medicine registrar (ST3+) in order to help to fund the cost of acquiring their specialist skill.

Trainees should look out for an email from the STC over the next few weeks containing instructions on how to apply!

If you’re still considering your choice of specialist skill, have a look at the current list of approved skills from the JRCPTB.
